Hey Google, make a group call now on Nest Hub Max

The company just confirmed that it’s rolling out Google Home’s calling feature in the US and Canada beginning today. Users can dial anyone in their contacts and local businesses for free — so long as the call recipient is in one of those two countries. To get it set up, you first need to set up the Google Assistant with your Duo account. Since the launch of the Nest Hub , it’s been possible to Duo call your smart display from a phone or call your loved ones from your Nest Hub. Meanwhile, the classic Google Home speakers were left without this handy feature, but not for long.

To end a call, either say "Ok Google, end call" or "Hang up". You can also tap the top of your Google Home or Home Max, or the centre of your Nest Audio, Nest Mini or Nest Wifi point. For those with a Google Home Mini, tap the side to hang up, while those with a Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max can tap "End call" on the display.

The availability of commands will vary depending on the calling methods set up on your device. For example, if you’ve set up Duo calling and turned on personal results, you’ll be able to say "Video call " to make video calls. According to Android Police, the feature is only supposed to be available in the US, but if your phone’s language settings are set to use “English ,” you might still be able to access it. The person on the other end will still hear you say Hey Google, so don't expect to fly totally under the radar with this approach, but you will get some privacy during the actual request. If you're on a video call when you use this feature, the call will be muted but the camera feed will continue. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for each speaker or hub you want to make calls from.

So have the Google Home app on your smartphone at all times. If you've set up household contacts on a Google Nest display, you can also choose a contact by tapping 'Call' on the "Household contacts" card. The calling method used with household contacts will depend upon the contact selected. It’s super important to know that you cannot initiate emergency calls to 911 using Google Home at this time.

The folks at Android Police have been tipped off to the recent arrival of audio-only Duo calling both to and from Google Home speakers. You can also use your speaker by saying "OK, Google, set up household contacts." Then a notification will come to your phone from the Google Assistant app helping you set up household contacts. The person you're calling needs to be stored in Google Contacts for things to work so the next step is to sync your contacts to your Google Nest speaker or hub. It looks like Google is prepared to port a lot of the features of the Google Home Hub over to other smart displays as well, including third-party manufactured products. To make things even weirder, it appears that the device won’t support audio-only calls, meaning that two different Home Hub owners can’t even call each other using those very same Home Hub devices. One owner would have to call his or her recipient using a phone, tablet or a smart display that does have a camera and supports Duo calls. The snazzy new Google Home Hubdoesn’t have a camera on it, ostensibly for privacy reasons but also possibly to downgrade the cost.
