Lifehouse band Wikipedia

life house song

American alternative rock band Lifehouse has released seven studio albums, three extended plays, one DVD, and sixteen singles. The band's debut single, "Hanging by a Moment", was named Billboard's song of the year in 2001. After signing to DreamWorks Records in 2000, the band released their debut studio album, No Name Face, which has been certified 2× Platinum by the RIAA.

Greatest Hits Tracklist

Most recently, it was featured in the film soundtrack The Time Traveler's Wife. The song received positive reviews from critics, as they applauded the use of instruments in the song. The song charted at number 83 and 84 in the United States and Canada respectively, and later charted in New Zealand at number 21. It is set in the scene of a tunnel where Wade is walking away in the opposite direction of a car crash. Lifehouse has played "Broken" live on several occasions, including on Soundstage and at the 2011 Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands. A seven-minute extended version is often the final song in their concert setlist.

“But Daddy I Love Him”

"And I had said that to Jack about you so I felt seen/ Everyone we know understands why it's meant to be," Swift continues, likely referring to longtime friend Jack Antonoff, who also produced the song. Indeed, some of Tortured Poets' tracks are laced with longing and heartache, while others scream (literally) anger and disbelief — not just with her ex-lovers but with the public's dissection of her love life. But bringing in Florence and The Machine for real on this one makes it the best song on the album. Plus, sure this isn’t a political song but it mentions both Florida and Texas so I think we can read some kind of message into that because she makes no mistakes.

She speaks about a world of people on "high horses," who "try and save you 'cause they hate you," not because they care. The album's first single was a bright, pop rock love song "First Time", released on April 24, 2007. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 48 in May,[26] and peaked at number three on the Hot Adult Top 40 Charts. The album's second single, "Whatever It Takes" was released to radio stations on October 29, 2007.[27] "Broken", the album's third single,[28] peaked at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Broken" has appeared on several television series, including Grey's Anatomy ("Lay Your Hands On Me"), Criminal Minds ("In Birth and Death", season 3, episode 2), One Tree Hill, One Life to Live and The Hills.

‘But Daddy I Love Him’ lyrics: Does Taylor Swift’s song reference ‘The Little Mermaid’?

This is a song that stole so many people’s hearts, it being a fun rock pop song that would brighten most people’s day. The song has debuted several live performances, one being on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. There are three remixes of the song that were released entitled, “Halfway Gone Remixes” that equally got positive reviews.

The band has performed the song live on late night national television shows. “First Time” debuted at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also charted internationally, debuted on the Canadian Hot 100 at number 79. The number nine song on our list is the third single released by Lifehouse from their fourth studio album. “Broken” was written and composed by Jason Wade who got inspired to write the song after visiting a friend who was in need of a kidney transplant. It is a touching and moving song that not only moves the people but also the song writer himself. “Broken” debuted at number 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also charted internationally where it debuted at number 92 on the Canadian Hot 100.

If you are a rock lover, you probably are a huge fan and follower of the Lifehouse band. The American band consists of Jason Wade, Rick Woolstenhulme and Bryce Soderberg who hail from Los Angeles. The release of touchy hit songs by the band, has led to the band being nominated severally for the Teen Choice Award.

In ‘Cassandra,’ Taylor Swift explores themes of betrayal, disbelief, and isolation, using the story of Cassandra of Troy, a princess and prophetess cursed by her ex-lover Apollo, to always deliver true prophecy but never be believed. Cassandra told of the imminent ruin of the city of Troy but, due to Apollo’s curse, she was not believed – in the same way nobody heeded Taylor’s true warnings. Then on the album's title track, the singer makes more specific references. "Sometimes I wonder if you're gonna screw this up with me/ But you told Lucy you'd kill yourself if I ever leave," she sings, seemingly referring to boygenius' Lucy Dacus, who is friends with Healy. “You and Me” is Lifehouse’s first single released from their eponymous third studio album, Lifehouse.

It is the third single released from their fourth studio album, Who We Are (2007). Lead singer Jason Wade was inspired to write the song after he visited a friend in Nashville who needed a kidney transplant. Originally released on June 18, 2007, as the fifth track on Who We Are, the song was then edited for radio to give it more of a "rock" feel. The new radio version of the song was released via digital download on July 8, 2008. This power pop song was released in May 2007, as the first single released from Lifehouse fourth studio album. The song writer Wade felt an urgent urge to write the track and thus he did put in some deep thought in writing the song.

Two women were brought in for questioning after they exited the house, the police department said in a statement. Today, “Sunday Jazz Brunch” remains a highlight for locals and visitors alike, and the venue continues to be a fixture on Hermosa’s Pier Plaza. Hermosa Beach’s historic Lighthouse Cafe is coming back to life today, following a long closure during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The restaurant space itself dates to the early 1930s, and has operated as a bar and live music venue under the Lighthouse name since the 1940s. Lee was traveling throughout North and South America when he had a two day layover stop in Los Angeles that lasted  three weeks.

Nine months later he moved from Toronto to Hermosa Beach and began working at Redbird as the AGM, learning cocktails & spirits from Tobin Shea and Julian Cox. He then took what he learned to a local group as the GM for Laurel Tavern (Hermosa Beach, Dallas TX, Studio City). Whatever it is, we think a long day of visiting these awesome, historic lighthouses in Southern California is a perfect little coastal road trip. One of the most electrifying live recorded sessions at the iconic venue recently got the full red carpet treatment. Lee Morgan’s The Complete Live at the Lighthouse is an expansive collection of all 12 sets of music the legendary trumpeter’s quintet recorded during their engagement at the Lighthouse Cafe in July of 1970.

Recordings made at the Lighthouse

After 10 years of working in kitchens from Toronto to Kansas City, Lee made the switch from the back of house to the bar, applying cooking techniques to cocktails. While the club also hosted visiting groups, the Lighthouse All-Stars became an ensemble in its own right, which had among its guest musicians Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan and Miles Davis. John Levine died in 1970 and Rumsey left "The Lighthouse" in 1971 to open the "Concerts By The Sea" jazz club in nearby Redondo Beach.

The Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce says the Lighthouse Café is one of 12 businesses to have reopened on the island in April alone, with a total of 92 businesses bouncing back since Hurricane Ian. He remains hopeful the return of more condos and resorts over the summer will bolster business, filling the newly expanded seating capacity at the café. Over the decades the historic Lighthouse Cafe has been a haven for jazz musicians and fans, hosting nights with famous names from Chet Baker to Miles Davis. More recently, the Lighthouse Cafe even earned a starring role in the film La La Land, though the property at 30 Pier Avenue has mostly dark for the past year. The restaurant will focus on takeout and limited-capacity outdoor dining only for now, and — per necessary COVID-19 protocols — no on-site live events or music, which has long been a hallmark for the property. This breakfast and lunch restaurant on Sanibel made its highly anticipated debut in its new home on Thursday, April 25. The self-described "World's Best Breakfast" is being served at 1020 Periwinkle Way, in the spot previously occupied by Sanibel Fresh.

The new restaurant — Old Cuban Restaurant and Bar at 1242 SW Pine Island Road, Unit 35 — will serve Latin food. A water feature, pergola, new fencing and kids area will be added to the outdoor space, and the three kitchens — which Gutierrez will lease out to burger, pizza and Latin food vendors — need to be finished. The parking lot has overflowed onto Pine Island Road since this bar & grill in Matlacha reopened a week ago after hurricane damage and a planned remodel. Joshua returned to his native California in 2012 to run the fine dining restaurant at the Peninsula Beverly Hills and later held a position as the executive sous chef at the Ace Hotel DTLA. Their sound was smoother and more melodic, a musical complement to California’s laidback, sun-soaked vibes. The Lighthouse Cafe, shut down since Hurricane Ian flooded it Sept. 28, 2022, is reopening almost 19 months later. It will about double in size when it opens at 1020 Periwinkle Way, just east of the entrance to the island from the Sanibel Causeway and a mile east of the previous location.

The venue was an incredibly important meeting point for the West Coast jazz scene, a place where an entirely new sound flourished. If you're in town for business, the Grand Cafe in Downtown LA can work for a quick drink/networking session. Actors Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, play the main characters adding a modern twist to an already well known story of love, colliding with the desire to live out your most incredible dreams.

SANIBEL, Fla. — The spirit of resilience continues to flourish on Sanibel Island as local businesses recover from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Ian. Among those is the Lighthouse Café, which celebrated its grand reopening on Thursday after having relocated further west on Periwinkle Way. In the 1950s, musicians on the West Coast, specifically in Los Angeles and San Francisco, began to splinter off from the hard-bop and blues-forward jazz that pervaded the East Coast scene. Saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, trumpeter Chet Baker, and others developed a more lyrical style of jazz that favored composition and arrangement over improvisation.

The Best Books by Anne, Charlotte and Emily Brontë Ranked

charlotte sisters

Her masterpiece, “Wuthering Heights,” is not only considered one of the greatest works in English literature but also a timeless tale of passion and obsession. Through her vivid descriptions and compelling characters, Emily Brontë delves into the depths of human emotions, exploring themes of love, revenge, and the complexities of relationships. Tragically, Emily’s life was cut short at the tender age of 30, as she succumbed to tuberculosis. Despite her untimely demise, her legacy continues to captivate readers around the world, as her words immortalize the power of raw emotions and the enduring beauty of her beloved Yorkshire countryside. Mourning in the sister-less parsonage, Charlotte distracted herself by writing.

Whilst in life and times remembered more for her sisters , Anne was no less talented as evidenced by the themes present in her novel “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall”. And whilst considered another example of Victorian gothic literature herself – Milton’s Paradise Lost became a big influence from which she drew inspiration. It features within her text as literary expressions that demonstrate one’s ability to think independently about difficult topics.

Jane Eyre was quickly sent to press and was an immediate sensation. The three Brontë sisters all cherished literary ambitions from an early age, and despite lives that were cut short by illness, secured a prominent place in the English literary canon. Instead, it is, for our money, the greatest of all of the books by the Brontë sisters, and an all-time classic. Anne Brontë wrote just two novels, and this was the first of them, a first-person tale published in 1847 and narrated by the title character, a young woman who takes up work as a governess to help support her family. But of course it’s the novels themselves that we should turn to find the most vital avatars of those characters. Below, we introduce the best books by the Brontë sisters, ranking them in order – controversially, perhaps, from ‘least good’ to ‘very best’.

What You Should Know About The Brontës: 10 Facts About The Most Interesting Literary Family

So embark on this literary voyage and experience the profound depth of Brontë’s words, as she invites you to explore the complexities of the human spirit and the power of self-discovery. In 1824, Charlotte and her sisters Maria (their departed mother’s namesake), Elizabeth, and Emily were sent away from the Parsonage where they lived with their father and an aunt, to a school for daughters of the clergy in Cowan’s Bridge. Maria and Elizabeth fell ill while there and died of tuberculosis; Charlotte and Emily returned home. In 1825, Anne faced further tragedy with the deaths of her sisters Maria and Elizabeth from tuberculosis. Charlotte and Emily were subsequently brought home from school and educated by their father, who instilled in them a love for reading and learning, exposing them, along with Anne, to classical literature and other genres. Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontė were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language.

They represented how possible and rewarding it can be to critique the normative expectations that have been placed on women historically. Charlotte was the eldest sister whose novel Jane Eyre is a true masterpiece of 19th-century literature. The novel is based on her personal experience as a governess and addresses issues such as social class disparity, female independence, morality, love and betrayal. Charlotte’s writing perfectly depicts the constraints faced by women during the Victorian era but also provided hope for female empowerment. To understand the Bronte Sisters’ path to literary success, we need to turn the pages back to their childhood and upbringing.

In just a few years, the siblings Anne, Charlotte, and Emily Brontë published seven remarkable full-length novels which continue to be read, enjoyed, and studied by countless people around the world. In 1845, the Brontë sisters were all back at their father’s home with no immediate job prospects. Discovering poetry each had written, they decided to use their inheritance from their aunt to pay for the publication of a collection of their poems. Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, was published in May 1846, containing 21 poems by Anne, 21 by Emily, and 19 by Charlotte. To conceal their gender, they adopted pen names, retaining their initials – Anne’s pseudonym was Acton Bell. In an attempt to escape the hated life of a governess, the sisters planned to set up a school of their own at the Parsonage.

Hopefully now you’re just as obsessed with the Brontës as I am, friends. Anyway, although the novel has been met with critical acclaim more recently, Wuthering Heights was not so beloved at the time of its publication. For a long time, Emily could not find a publisher, and when she finally did, she had to pay for the novel to be published.

These were very uncommon forenames but the initials of each of the sisters were preserved and the patronym could have been inspired by that of the vicar of the parish, Arthur Bell Nicholls. It was in fact on 18 May 1845 that he took up his duties at Haworth, at the moment when the publication project was well advanced. Aside from being pioneers in feminist literature during a time when women’s voices were often silenced, each sister had her unique approach to storytelling that has resonated with countless readers over generations. Their raw emotional honesty coupled with nuanced characterization set them apart from other authors of their time. The Bronte Sisters were three siblings – Charlotte, Emily, and Anne – born in Yorkshire in the early 19th century.

After a brief trip home upon the death of her aunt, Charlotte returned to Brussels as a pupil-teacher. Her friends had left Brussels, and Madame Héger appears to have become jealous of her. The nature of Charlotte’s attachment to Héger and the degree to which she understood herself have been much discussed. His was the most-interesting mind she had yet met, and he had perceived and evoked her latent talents. His strong and eccentric personality appealed both to her sense of humour and to her affections. She offered him an innocent but ardent devotion, but he tried to repress her emotions.

He was often the driving force in the Brontë siblings' construction of the imaginary worlds. The influence revealed by Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is much less clear. Anne's works are largely founded on her experience as a governess and on that of her brother's decline. In 1824, the four eldest girls (excluding Anne) entered the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge,[22] which educated the children of less prosperous members of the clergy, and had been recommended to Mr Brontë.

All three sisters pursued careers as writers and produced several notable novels throughout their short lives. Perhaps the most famous of all the Bronte sisters’ books is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. This classic novel tells the story of headstrong governess Jane who falls in love with her employer Mr. Rochester. Through Jane’s voice, we delve into issues of class struggle and gender inequality as she navigates her way through rigid social hierarchies in search of true love. The Bronte Sisters – Emily, Charlotte, and Anne – are some of the most influential writers to have ever graced the literary world.

She published Villette, which detailed her own fervent longings for love in 1853, amidst a romantic entangled she had never anticipated. Emily's writings were initially published under the name Ellis Bell. She joined her sisters in publishing a collective volume of poetry in 1846.

Emily’s cough at the funeral rapidly progressed to infirmity, and in December she also passed away. The book Wuthering Heights is a commonly read piece of literature in high school or college. In fact, the novel is one of the few works by female writers that is typically assigned in literature courses covering the canon of Western literature. However, three sisters in 19th-century England managed to bust their way into the male-dominated world of publishing.

Charlotte and Anne appear to have had the most success in the field of education. Charlotte served as a teacher at Roe Head School, teaching her sisters in addition to other pupils, resigning only when Anne’s illness caused them both to return home. After Anne’s first dismissal from a governess position for the Ingham family, she found more success at Thorp Green Hill for the Robinson family. She found her brother Branwell a tutor position with the same family; however, a reputed affair with the wife of his charges caused his dismissal in 1845. Anne Brontë too returned home around the same time, having suffered terribly from loneliness during her time away.

In 1857, two years after Charlotte’s death, her first novel, The Professor, was finally published. In the same year Elizabeth Gaskell’s moving tribute to her friend, The Life of Charlotte Brontė, also appeared. What Charlotte saw as her father’s unjust treatment worked in Nicholls’ favour, and the couple were eventually married in Haworth Church on 29 June 1854. Though Charlotte had entered the married state with misgivings, she found unexpected happiness with Arthur.

You’ll also need to choose between a fixed-rate mortgage, where the interest rate is set for the duration of the loan, and an adjustable-rate mortgage. Fixed-rate mortgages offer more stability and are a better option if you plan to live in a home in the long term, but adjustable-rate mortgages may offer lower interest rates upfront. Getting the best mortgage rate always starts with getting your credit as strong as it can be. Start by checking your credit score and addressing any problems. Then work on making yourself look more attractive to mortgage lenders by paying off excessive debt, making sure you make all payments on time and so on.

To enjoy the benefits of debt consolidation, you should not carry new credit card or high interest rate debt.

Mortgage refinance is the process of replacing your current mortgage with a new loan. Often people do this to get better borrowing terms like lower interest rates. Refinancing requires a new loan application with your existing lender or a new one. Your lender will then re-evaluate your credit history and financial situation. A bi-weekly mortgage is a mortgage in which the borrower makes half of their monthly mortgage payment every two weeks, rather than paying the full payment amount once every month. So if you paid monthly and your monthly mortgage payment was $1,000, then for a year you would make 12 payments of $1,000 each, for a total of $12,000.

When rates fall, that’ll spur demand, too, so you might want to get ahead of any potential rush into the market. A fixed rate is when your interest rate remains the same for your entire loan term. An adjustable rate stays the same for a predetermined length of time and then resets to a new interest rate on scheduled intervals. A 5-year ARM, for instance, offers a fixed interest rate for 5 years and then adjusts each year for the remaining length of the loan. Typically the first fixed period offers a low rate, making it beneficial if you plan to refinance or move before the first rate adjustment. Borrowing costs on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, popular with homeowners refinancing their home loans, also rose this week, lifting the average rate to 6.44% from 6.39% last week.

The gap that has jumped open between these two lines has created a nationwide lock-in effect — paralyzing people in homes they may wish to leave — on a scale not seen in decades. For homeowners not looking to move anytime soon, the low rates they secured during the pandemic will benefit them for years to come. But for many others, those rates have become a complication, disrupting both household decisions and the housing market as a whole. Something deeply unusual has happened in the American housing market over the last two years, as mortgage rates have risen to around 7 percent.

A long-term mortgage is a loan with a longer length of time. Long-term mortgages typically have higher rates but offer more protection against rising interest rates. Penalties for breaking a long-term mortgage can be higher for this type of term. Mortgage pre-approval should not be confused with mortgage pre-qualification, where you tell a lender about your income and debts but don’t provide documentation to verify your claims. Pre-qualification is a way lenders can give you a ballpark idea of what amount you could borrow, but it’s no guarantee you’ll get the loan until you go through the more thorough process of pre-approval. Mortgage pre-approval is a statement from a lender who’s thoroughly reviewed your finances and decided to offer you a home loan up to a certain amount.

It is possible to pay down your loan faster than the set term by making additional monthly payments toward your principal loan balance. Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) is calculated based on your credit score and amount of down payment. If your loan amount is greater than 80% of the home purchase price, lenders require insurance on their investment. This is a monthly cost that increases your mortgage payment. Use Zillow’s home loan calculator to quickly estimate your total mortgage payment including principal and interest, plus estimates for PMI, property taxes, home insurance and HOA fees.

Consider how much you earn each month and how much you spend (on debt, savings, retirement, college funds, etc.). A 203(k) loan is insured by the FHA and is intended for those buying a home in need of significant renovations and repairs. A 203(k) loan covers the purchase of the home and the improvements needed.

I must've gotten lucky, because most of the other guests had booked a year in advance. Visiting Milford Sound in the rain is not just worth it, it's a unique and magical experience! Unlike typical preferences for sunny weather, Milford Sound truly comes alive in the rain. The rain adds a moody atmosphere, transforms the landscape, and fuels an impressive display of hundreds of waterfalls cascading down the rugged mountains.

Fiordland

This helicopter tour from Queenstown soars over Milford Sound and lands for a 2-hour cruise. Upon flying back, you’ll land on top of Mt Tutoko to walk on a glacier. On the helicopter flights, you’ll have commentary from your pilot and might even spot dolphins and seals in the water. The best month to visit Milford Sound is all year round! Contrary to specific months, any time from January to December offers a spectacular experience. On sunny days, witness the stunning contrast of blue skies against majestic mountain peaks.

A sound, on the other hand, is a river valley flooded by the sea following a rise in sea levels or depression of the land, or a combination of both. Throughout Fiordland the fiords are officially mapped as sounds. Guests should always allow extra time for themselves to check in and board their vessels. You are required to check-in at the RealNZ counter 30min prior to departure.

Day Unseen Fiordland & Stewart Island

For a relaxing journey, we recommend allowing plenty of time for photo stops, lunch/drink breaks and for exploring the local area. Spending the night in this very special part of the world means truly taking in its splendour. Our small group cruises accommodate a maximum of 22 passengers per night, in nine climate-controlled cabins each with ensuite and sea views. If you are not confident about driving in winter conditions then take a RealNZ coach to Milford Sound so you can relax and take in the stunning scenery. Doubtful Sound is located in the heart of Fiordland National Park where the mountains are still very impressive but not as high as Milford Sound. Doubtful Sound is three times longer and  has a sea surface area roughly ten times larger than Milford Sound.

If driving, make sure you fill your vehicle with petrol in Te Anau before travelling to Milford as there are no petrol stations at Milford Sound or en route. The journey to Milford Sound is just as spectacular as the destination itself. Milford Sound is around 5-6 hours (one-way) from Queenstown and around 3 hours from Te Anau by road.

My last option is something I have never had the pleasure of doing but honestly is a dream of mine! Spending the night on a Milford Sound cruise is the most epic way to explore the fiord. The next way I highly recommend you to consider is the bus ride to Milford Sound with a return flight back to Queenstown.

Seal Rock

If relaxation is more your style, then you can choose to soak up the views from the deck, read a book, or interact with our knowledgeable crew. As evening falls, enjoy a lavish three course buffet carvery in the dining saloon. Evening dining includes a three-course meal (vegetarian option available – please advise if required at the time of booking). Then relax in the company of fellow travellers or indulge in some star-gazing before retiring to your private cabin. In the morning enjoy a choice of cooked and continental breakfast, served in the dinning saloon.

All tours combine the cruise in Milford Sound and many include a lunch option. You’ll also get plenty of opportunities to stop for those iconic photographs en-route and the local drivers provide great commentary to keep you entertained throughout the day. RealNZ offers one-night overnight cruises in Milford Sound and one or two-night overnight cruises in Doubtful Sound. For the most adventurous explorers, we offer multi-day Discovery Cruises in Fiordland’s remotest fiords, as well as around the quiet beaches and forest of Rakiura National Park, Stewart Island. However, if you’re looking to make the most out of your scenic flight experience, you can land on top of a glacier too!

They offer larger motorhomes (as opposed to budget campervans) at really reasonable rates. On your cruise, you can see New Zealand Fur Seals (very common), Fiordland Crested Penguins, dolphins, and a range of New Zealand bird species. Milford Sound has been a tourist attraction for over a hundred years, but in the early days, the journey to Milford was done on foot or horseback. In a busy place like Milford Sound, having a more intimate experience is everything and well worth searching for. The best part is that we’ve actually outlined the best cruise to do in Milford Sound instead of just giving you every option available, which really doesn’t narrow it down. Because, let’s be honest, not every cruise in Milford Sound is worth the hype.

Milford Sound cruises must be experienced to be believed. The stunning sheer cliffs surrounding you, the inky blackness of the water and the frosty alpine peaks looming over it all combine to create a stunning tableau. Have already told others to go on the overnight cruise it was the best trip we have been on. Our large family group of nine sailed on the Fiordland Jewel for their overnight cruise in Milford Sound, and I am finding that words fail me in trying to convey how wonderful it was. We were in the midst of a 3-week trip to New Zealand and Australia, and this was without doubt the highlight of the entire trip. Our friendly professional driver will pick you up from your accommodation and return you there following your cruise.

There are a number of Milford Sound overnight tour packages available, including self drive options and options with coach transport included. You could also book a scenic flight back from Milford Sound. If you’d like to experience Milford Sound without the crowds, and spend a little longer out on the water, you might be interested in an overnight cruise. Exploring Milford Sound offers a unique opportunity to witness these creatures in their natural habitats. Whether you're walking through the temperate rainforest, driving the mountain road, or embarking on a scenic cruise, the chances of encountering wildlife are high.

If you’re self-driving then be sure to read my post on the perfect Milford Sound itinerary from Queenstown. Although the article starts in Queenstown, just use the stops and estimated times as a guide from Te Anau onwards. The Fiordland Jewel is beautiful and comfortable, the staff exceedingly friendly and helpful, the food was excellent, and staterooms and beds very comfortable. The cruise crew were all friendly and welcoming and made sure we had a great time. Having the opportunity to swim, kayak and jump of the boat was exciting and made our experience so much fun. Our ultimate guide will give you all the tips you need to plan that special holiday in the south island including Queenstown, Te Anau, Stewart Island and Milford and Doubtful Sounds.

Afternoon cruise up most of the Milford sound then anchored overnight and the next morning cruised up to the Tasman Sea then back to docks. Small crew does triple duty to make sure everyone is well cared for onboard. Unlike the Milford Sound Track, a Milford Sound cruise is amazing at any time of the year! In fact, going on a cruise in Milford in winter (as we did once) was perfect because it was not very busy and the surrounding mountains were covered in snow!

A relatively small number of ships sail in the Great Lakes during any given year. Some of the ships that operate in the region will alternate between three or even four different routes during the short summer season, giving you lots of choices. There are also some European operators that have boats cruising the Great Lakes.

Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Inspiration offers 10- to 18-day cruises departing from Milwaukee and traveling to Halifax, Toronto or Detroit. However, don’t expect your standard all-inclusive, big-ship vacation with tons of restaurants, activities and kid-friendly amenities. Rather, you’ll be cruising the Great Lakes in a smaller vessel with just a couple hundred other travelers. This is partly due to the size of the locks that connect the lakes, as only the smaller ships can pass through them. Settled by Germans in the 1840s, "Brew City," as it's known, also is a mecca of sorts for beer lovers — and not just because it's home to the original Miller Brewing Company complex, which is open daily for tours.

Lengthwise, you'll find Great Lakes voyages ranging from seven to 15 nights. Others focus on just three or four of the interconnected bodies of water. Some of the ships also offer sailings that combine travel on one or more of the Great Lakes with a passage through the St. Lawrence Seaway. In some cases, these latter trips include travel all the way to Montreal. All this can be seen via an overland trip, of course, and many people explore the Great Lakes region by car or on motorcoach tours. But the region is so sprawling — the Great Lakes touch eight U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ontario — that logistically it's almost impossible to experience the area in a broad way on a single trip without going by ship.
