From Queenstown & Te Anau, NZ

milford sound overnight cruise

Please request transport when making your booking and we will get back to you regarding availability. When we are informed in advance about guests with hindered mobility, we make every effort to mitigate the impact by assigning rooms in proximity to the main areas. However, it’s important to note that our vessels are not optimally equipped for potential needs. We recommend each passenger brings no more than a carry-on sized bag due to space restrictions in the cabins. For a list of what to bring please see the 'more info' section or your booking confirmation. Overnight parking is available in the Realnz coach area outside of the Milford Terminal for $30, from 3.30pm until 11am the following morning.

milford sound overnight cruise

We’ve collated popular Milford Sound day tours here
and prices start from just $179 including the cruise.

Tours from Te Anau also don’t leave until around 9 am so you get a little bit of a sleep-in on your holiday! You can reserve this tour for $264 NZD per person, and I recommend booking it in advance. The absolute best Milford Sound cruise is this small boat boutique cruise, so you can get right up to the stunning landscape of the fiord. This was the best decision of my trip so far - highly recommend.

I must've gotten lucky, because most of the other guests had booked a year in advance. Visiting Milford Sound in the rain is not just worth it, it's a unique and magical experience! Unlike typical preferences for sunny weather, Milford Sound truly comes alive in the rain. The rain adds a moody atmosphere, transforms the landscape, and fuels an impressive display of hundreds of waterfalls cascading down the rugged mountains.

Fiordland

This helicopter tour from Queenstown soars over Milford Sound and lands for a 2-hour cruise. Upon flying back, you’ll land on top of Mt Tutoko to walk on a glacier. On the helicopter flights, you’ll have commentary from your pilot and might even spot dolphins and seals in the water. The best month to visit Milford Sound is all year round! Contrary to specific months, any time from January to December offers a spectacular experience. On sunny days, witness the stunning contrast of blue skies against majestic mountain peaks.

A sound, on the other hand, is a river valley flooded by the sea following a rise in sea levels or depression of the land, or a combination of both. Throughout Fiordland the fiords are officially mapped as sounds. Guests should always allow extra time for themselves to check in and board their vessels. You are required to check-in at the RealNZ counter 30min prior to departure.

Day Unseen Fiordland & Stewart Island

For a relaxing journey, we recommend allowing plenty of time for photo stops, lunch/drink breaks and for exploring the local area. Spending the night in this very special part of the world means truly taking in its splendour. Our small group cruises accommodate a maximum of 22 passengers per night, in nine climate-controlled cabins each with ensuite and sea views. If you are not confident about driving in winter conditions then take a RealNZ coach to Milford Sound so you can relax and take in the stunning scenery. Doubtful Sound is located in the heart of Fiordland National Park where the mountains are still very impressive but not as high as Milford Sound. Doubtful Sound is three times longer and  has a sea surface area roughly ten times larger than Milford Sound.

If driving, make sure you fill your vehicle with petrol in Te Anau before travelling to Milford as there are no petrol stations at Milford Sound or en route. The journey to Milford Sound is just as spectacular as the destination itself. Milford Sound is around 5-6 hours (one-way) from Queenstown and around 3 hours from Te Anau by road.

My last option is something I have never had the pleasure of doing but honestly is a dream of mine! Spending the night on a Milford Sound cruise is the most epic way to explore the fiord. The next way I highly recommend you to consider is the bus ride to Milford Sound with a return flight back to Queenstown.

Seal Rock

If relaxation is more your style, then you can choose to soak up the views from the deck, read a book, or interact with our knowledgeable crew. As evening falls, enjoy a lavish three course buffet carvery in the dining saloon. Evening dining includes a three-course meal (vegetarian option available – please advise if required at the time of booking). Then relax in the company of fellow travellers or indulge in some star-gazing before retiring to your private cabin. In the morning enjoy a choice of cooked and continental breakfast, served in the dinning saloon.

All tours combine the cruise in Milford Sound and many include a lunch option. You’ll also get plenty of opportunities to stop for those iconic photographs en-route and the local drivers provide great commentary to keep you entertained throughout the day. RealNZ offers one-night overnight cruises in Milford Sound and one or two-night overnight cruises in Doubtful Sound. For the most adventurous explorers, we offer multi-day Discovery Cruises in Fiordland’s remotest fiords, as well as around the quiet beaches and forest of Rakiura National Park, Stewart Island. However, if you’re looking to make the most out of your scenic flight experience, you can land on top of a glacier too!

They offer larger motorhomes (as opposed to budget campervans) at really reasonable rates. On your cruise, you can see New Zealand Fur Seals (very common), Fiordland Crested Penguins, dolphins, and a range of New Zealand bird species. Milford Sound has been a tourist attraction for over a hundred years, but in the early days, the journey to Milford was done on foot or horseback. In a busy place like Milford Sound, having a more intimate experience is everything and well worth searching for. The best part is that we’ve actually outlined the best cruise to do in Milford Sound instead of just giving you every option available, which really doesn’t narrow it down. Because, let’s be honest, not every cruise in Milford Sound is worth the hype.

Milford Sound cruises must be experienced to be believed. The stunning sheer cliffs surrounding you, the inky blackness of the water and the frosty alpine peaks looming over it all combine to create a stunning tableau. Have already told others to go on the overnight cruise it was the best trip we have been on. Our large family group of nine sailed on the Fiordland Jewel for their overnight cruise in Milford Sound, and I am finding that words fail me in trying to convey how wonderful it was. We were in the midst of a 3-week trip to New Zealand and Australia, and this was without doubt the highlight of the entire trip. Our friendly professional driver will pick you up from your accommodation and return you there following your cruise.

There are a number of Milford Sound overnight tour packages available, including self drive options and options with coach transport included. You could also book a scenic flight back from Milford Sound. If you’d like to experience Milford Sound without the crowds, and spend a little longer out on the water, you might be interested in an overnight cruise. Exploring Milford Sound offers a unique opportunity to witness these creatures in their natural habitats. Whether you're walking through the temperate rainforest, driving the mountain road, or embarking on a scenic cruise, the chances of encountering wildlife are high.

If you’re self-driving then be sure to read my post on the perfect Milford Sound itinerary from Queenstown. Although the article starts in Queenstown, just use the stops and estimated times as a guide from Te Anau onwards. The Fiordland Jewel is beautiful and comfortable, the staff exceedingly friendly and helpful, the food was excellent, and staterooms and beds very comfortable. The cruise crew were all friendly and welcoming and made sure we had a great time. Having the opportunity to swim, kayak and jump of the boat was exciting and made our experience so much fun. Our ultimate guide will give you all the tips you need to plan that special holiday in the south island including Queenstown, Te Anau, Stewart Island and Milford and Doubtful Sounds.

Afternoon cruise up most of the Milford sound then anchored overnight and the next morning cruised up to the Tasman Sea then back to docks. Small crew does triple duty to make sure everyone is well cared for onboard. Unlike the Milford Sound Track, a Milford Sound cruise is amazing at any time of the year! In fact, going on a cruise in Milford in winter (as we did once) was perfect because it was not very busy and the surrounding mountains were covered in snow!

Great Lakes Cruise Tips: Great Lakes Cruising 101

cruise ships on the great lakes

NOAA scientists will join expeditions in the Great Lakes to conduct research. There is a chance that scientists may also offer lectures to Viking guests during cruises. The two Great Lakes ships are relatively new additions for American Queen Voyages.

Viking River Cruises

From Table Rock, a guided walk allows you to follow the crest of the Horseshoe Falls, one of the waterfalls that make up Niagara. In addition to the main Coastal Dining Room, the ships have a casual buffet venue. Local musicians come onboard for performances, such as a Motown tribute in Detroit. Located along the picturesque shores of Lake Superior, Duluth is the biggest inland harbor in the world, despite being 600 feet above sea level and over 2,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Both rugged and refined, the town is home to a world famous ariel lift bridge and charming neighborhoods filled with local breweries and restaurants.

Learn About Credit Cards

This new venture of the ever-expanding brand will bring small-ship trips to Antarctica and the Great Lakes region. Viking will begin these voyages in January 2022 with the Viking Octantis, which will be followed by a second ship, Viking Polaris, in August 2022.

Niagara Falls

A relatively small number of ships sail in the Great Lakes during any given year. Some of the ships that operate in the region will alternate between three or even four different routes during the short summer season, giving you lots of choices. There are also some European operators that have boats cruising the Great Lakes.

Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Inspiration offers 10- to 18-day cruises departing from Milwaukee and traveling to Halifax, Toronto or Detroit. However, don’t expect your standard all-inclusive, big-ship vacation with tons of restaurants, activities and kid-friendly amenities. Rather, you’ll be cruising the Great Lakes in a smaller vessel with just a couple hundred other travelers. This is partly due to the size of the locks that connect the lakes, as only the smaller ships can pass through them. Settled by Germans in the 1840s, "Brew City," as it's known, also is a mecca of sorts for beer lovers — and not just because it's home to the original Miller Brewing Company complex, which is open daily for tours.

Led by your guide, visit the Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum & Mine, stepping into the shoes of miners who once toiled beneath the earth's surface. We provide guests an extraordinary cruising experience while exploring the most magnificent regions of the world. Enjoy luxurious accommodations, exceptional cuisine, and personalized service every day on board our modern cruise ships. Our premium category L staterooms are over 300 square feet and are located on the 5th deck level of the ship, allowing for plenty of privacy.

Lengthwise, you'll find Great Lakes voyages ranging from seven to 15 nights. Others focus on just three or four of the interconnected bodies of water. Some of the ships also offer sailings that combine travel on one or more of the Great Lakes with a passage through the St. Lawrence Seaway. In some cases, these latter trips include travel all the way to Montreal. All this can be seen via an overland trip, of course, and many people explore the Great Lakes region by car or on motorcoach tours. But the region is so sprawling — the Great Lakes touch eight U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ontario — that logistically it's almost impossible to experience the area in a broad way on a single trip without going by ship.

Great Lakes Cruise Tips: Know Before You Take Any Great Lakes Cruises

The best time to book a Great Lakes cruise is right when a cruise line first opens bookings on that sailing, often more than a year in advance. You'll have your pick of itineraries and cabins and often the best fares. Located at the northeastern edge of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Sault Saint Marie is the site of the Soo Locks, a marvel of engineering that connects Lake Superior to Lake Huron. The locks themselves are the big attractions in Sault Saint Marie — head to the observation deck at Soo Locks Park to watch freighters passing by and learn more at the Soo Locks Visitor Center. The two main players in Great Lakes cruising are Viking (a newcomer in 2022) and Pearl Seas Cruises.

Read on to discover more about Great Lakes cruising and why you should be closely considering doing so very soon. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Cruise lines often run sales in the fall or in the early months of the year (a period known in the cruise industry as "wave season"). Some of the most desirable cabins might be sold out; being flexible about your sail date or itinerary can help.

Accounting for 21% of all the world's fresh water, they truly are a marvel. Viking Great Lakes cruises for Viking Octantis visit upper Midwest destinations that even those living in the region rarely see. Using Milwaukee as a home port, Viking's Undiscovered Great Lakes itinerary stops in Wisconsin's Apostle Islands, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and Duluth in Minnesota before ending in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

As you ride, enjoy narration, including the history of Duluth, its harbor, and the importance of the railroads to the development of Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Old Mission Peninsula extends into Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay offering the ideal climate for growing varietal wine grapes which have been well recognized by wine enthusiasts the world over. On a scenic drive, enjoy the beauty of the Old Mission Peninsula and experience its award-winning wines. Along the way, visit three wineries, learn about wine production on vineyard tour, explore a wine cave, and be treated to two wine tastings and a full glass of your favorite variety. Mackinac Island is a living Victorian town where personal motorized vehicles are prohibited – all those visiting or living on the island travel by horse or horse-drawn carriage, bicycle, or on foot. While Mackinac Island is known for its opulent Victorian homes and hotels, it has a long Native American history.

View iron ore docks and the many beautiful Victorian homes that embellish the city, including those in the East Side Home District. Admire Lake Superior Beach, Tourist Park, St. Peter’s Cathedral, and downtown Marquette. Stop at Marquette Maritime Museum & Lighthouse, a one-story, stone, hipped-roof Richardsonian Romanesque style structure built in 1891.

For some exercise, take a walk along The Dequindre Cut Greenway, a two-mile urban recreational path that offers a pedestrian link between the East Riverfront and historic neighborhoods. Since the Industrial Revolution, the Amish have been largely known as hardworking, devoutly religious people who shun most types of technology. Spend a day in their company led by an Amish guide who will be with you throughout your journey. Begin at the Heritage Marketplace, where you can explore and purchase items at Amish-owned shops. Take a buggy ride and visit the Amish Heritage Museum which showcases important Bibles, hymnals, and clothing. Arrive at the Bricker's Amish home for lunch with a menu that features chicken, mashed potatoes, homemade noodles w/gravy, vegetable, salad, fresh baked bread with homemade preserves, and date-nut pudding.

Caribbean Princess’ Lotus Spa is located on Deck 16 and offers a variety of facials, massages, seaweed wraps, acupuncture, medi-spa treatments and more. Wines from Around the World

The ship completely lost propulsion about 25 nautical miles (46 km) southeast of Dublin, Ireland in the Irish Sea, and was left adrift for nine hours. During the power outage, air conditioners, lighting, hotel functions, and toilets were all functional.[10] The ship regained power and sailed to Belfast, Northern Ireland, missing her next port of Dublin on her itinerary. An ocean-going tug was dispatched from Holyhead in North Wales, UK and an air/sea rescue helicopter from Dublin monitored the situation. The cruise continued without any further problems to either the ship or the passengers. Caribbean Princess comes alive at night with live music or crew-led fun in virtually every available space on the ship, including the Piazza.

Snorkel along an underwater coral reef trail, swim through warm clear waters, and lounge on the white sands while looking out on a vista that can only be described as tropical perfection. St. Kitts and the neighboring island of Nevis were once considered the crown jewels of the Caribbean, and it's easy to see why. Green hillsides, fields of sugarcane and dramatic volcanoes rise into the strikingly blue sky. The 2600-passenger ship Caribbean Princess underwent a major drydock refit in early 2009 when were added facilities available on the younger fleet mates Crown, Emerald and Ruby. Now passengers spend hours sitting in the cosy, patio-style seating places, sipping coffee, reading, playing board games and watching occasional performers, ranging from a Cirque-type cube-spinner to a BMX biker.

Instead, you’ll need to present another proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID. U.S. citizens under 16 are exempt from the passport requirement for land and sea border crossings.

While traveling abroad with a group can create lasting memories, organizing such trips can be challenging—especially when everyone needs passports. As travelers, we’re so used to paying piecemeal for vacations—booking airfare here, the hotel or Airbnb there, and splurging on meals and drinks upon arrival. We don’t often realize the true total cost as it’s stretched across several payments and to many sources. What makes this vacation unique is the luxury of time and space, which allow you to truly relax and explore many sides of yourself.
